Have you heard about Barnum’s effect or personal validation effect?

If not, below you will find a video that explains it. You can also make use of the vocabulary list and exercises specially prepared for the video.

Before you listen, look at some useful vocabulary that will make the listening a bit easier:

Słownictwo ze słuchania:

conduct experiment – do experiment (przeprowadzić eksperyment)

exploit effect – make use of effect (wykorzystać efekt)

fall victim –become a victim (paść ofiarą)

spark excitement/emotional reaction – couse excitement/emotional reaction (wywołać pobudzenie / emocjonalną reakcję)

volunteer information –give information freeily (dobrowolnie podać informacje)

bidirectional relationship – a relation that is functioning in two directions (dwustronna relacja / powiązanie)

loop of gullibility – vicious circle of naivety (pętla łatwowierności)

confirmation bias – the tendency to interpret new evidence as confirmation of one’s existing beliefs or theories (błąd konfirmacji/ efekt potwierdzenia)

bias – prejudice, inclination (uprzedzenie, inklinacja)

fallacy –a mistaken belief, misconception (błąd, fałszywe rozumowanie)

validation – proof, substatiation (potwierdzenie; uprawomocnienie)

exploit – use (wykorzystać)

generic personality profile – general personality profile (ogólny profil osobowości)

Read the questions before you start to listen, then answer them. You may need to listen more than one time. You will find the answers at the bottom of the page.

After the listening you can work on some more vocabulary. You can see collocations (związki wyrazowe) with the verbs you have learnt in the first part (conduct, spark and exploit). To check if you remeber collocations you can cover one side of the picture and try to remember what was on the other side.
