phrasal verbs with ‘up’

Phrasal verbs with ‘up’ are the topic of this lesson. All phrasal verbs are explained in English and followed by examples. At the bottom of the site you will find an exercise that will help you to revise the phrasal verbs.

Phrasal verbs with ‘up’ :

1.BREAK UP

  1. end a relationship

example: She broke up with her boyfriend.

2. LOOK UP TO sb

  1. respect somebody

example: Tom looks up to his granfather.

3. LOOK sth UP

  1. look for and find information

example: He looked the word up in a dictionary.

4. BLOW UP

  1. explode

example: The factory blew up in the morning.

5. BLOW sth UP

  1. to inflade sth / add air

example: He blew the mattress by himself.

6. TURN UP

  1. appear

example: Tina turned up at the party.

7. TURN sth UP

  1. make louder

example: Could you turn up the radio?

8. COME UP WITH

  1. create / think of

example: Susan came up with a brilliant idea yesterday.

9. TAKE UP

  1. accept an offer
  2. start doing sth

Examples: He took up the job in marketing.

10. SET UP

  1. create / start

Example: Anna set up a company 3 years ago.

11. SET sth UP

  1. to install / position sth

example: Can you set the DVD player for me?

12. DO UP

  1. redecorate / remake

example: They did up the living room.

13. DOLL UP

  1. dress oneself up

example: She dolled herself up for her new boyfriend.

14. SPEAK UP

  1. speak louder.

example: I can’t hear you. Can you speak up?
