example: We can pencil in a meeting for the next week.

2.lay off

  1. sack, fire

example: The company laid off 20 employees.

3.set up

  1. start

example: Are you planning to set up a business?

4.take on

  1. employ

example: We took on 10 new workers last week.

5.call off

  1. cancel

example: The CEO couldn’t make it to the meeting, so it had to be called off.

6.close down

  1. close for good

example: The business was no going well and they decided to close it down.

7.carry out

  1. do, perform

example: One of our workers has a problem with carrying out his duties properly.

8.kick off

  1. start, begin

example: We should kick off the meeting at 10 a.m.

9.sign off

  1. to stop doing your work for a period of time

example: I am not feeling well today. I think I will sign off early.

10.write off

  1. deduct

example: You can write these bills off as a business expense.
