Verb “to be”


Affirmative Negative Questions
I was was not = wasn’t Was I?
you were were not = weren’t Were you?
he was was not = wasn’t Was he?
she was was not = wasn’t Was she?
it was was not = wasn’t Was it?
we were were not = weren’t Were we?
you were were not = weren’t Were you?
they were were not = weren’t Were they?

Examples:

He was at the cinema yesterday.

He wasn’t at the cinema yesterday.

Was he at the cinema yesterday?

Other verbs:

Affirmative:

Subject II form Object
She danced at the party.
They wrote a letter.

I) regular verbs

  • we make II form by adding -ed ending e.g. dance – danced, walk – walked

When do we use it?

Use 1
to talk about past events
Examples
I was in Spain last year
I didn’t go home yesterday.
Use 2
to talk about past habits
Examples
I smoked when I was a teenager.

Typical words:

  • in 1994 / 2005 /1945
  • in July/February/December
