Listening – Barnum’s effect

Have you heard about Barnum’s effect or personal validation effect?

If not, below you will find a video that explains it. You can also make use of a vocbulary list and a listening task.

Before you listen, look at some useful vocabulary that will make the listening a bit easier:

Vocabulary from the listening:

exploit effect – make use of effect

spark excitement/emotional reaction – couse excitement/emotional reaction

bidirectional relationship – a relation that is functioning in two directions

confirmation bias – the tendency to interpret new evidence as confirmation of one’s existing beliefs or theories

validation – proof, substatiation

Listening task

Read the questions before you start to listen, then answer them. You may need to listen more than one time. You will find the answers at the bottom of the page.

After the listening you can work on some more vocabulary. You can see collocations with the verbs you have learnt in the first part (conduct, spark and exploit). To check if you remeber collocations you can cover one side of the picture and try to remember what was on the other side.
